February 2021 - Digital Time Capsule

Another month down, another month closer to spring, and (hopefully) another month closer to the end of *gestures broadly* all of this.

As we start to see a light at the end of this very long, wintery tunnel, we’ve put together a list of February’s hottest trends, from the feta pasta craze to the end of Kimye (?!).

Harvey’s Ghosted

We’ve all been there: you’re seeing someone new and it all seems to be going really well -- almost toooooo well. Then all of a sudden, the person vanishes without a trace.

Harvey’s tried to soothe that burn this Valentine’s Day, offering a free Smokin' Hot Burger to anyone brave enough to share the stories that burned as much as their new ghost pepper sauce.

Why? Because #HarveysWouldntGhostYou.

Feta pasta

You’ve seen it, you’ve craved it, you’ve probably tried to make it. The TikTok feta pasta has been taking the internet (and grocery shelves) by storm.

Originally created by Finnish Blogger, Liemessa, the dish is SO incredibly easy and SO incredibly delish.

Interested in making it? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Pasta – any shape you’d like!

  • Feta – duh.

  • Cherry Tomatoes – these work best!

  • Garlic – keep the vampires away.

  • Olive Oil – don’t skimp out on this one.

With everything but the pasta in a baking dish, set the oven to 400F. Mix in some fresh basil, red pepper flakes, coarse salt, and/or any other seasoning your heart desires. Bake it for 30 minutes, or until the tomatoes have burst, while you boil your pasta. Take it out, mix in the pasta, and voila! Dinner (or lunch… or breakfast really) is served!

Side hustles on the rise

Looking for extra cash? A survey conducted by Angus Reid for Turo reported that 34 per cent of respondents have taken on a side hustle since the pandemic started or plan to do so in the coming year.

Forty-three per cent of these hustlers that have started or plan to pick up a side gig have an income of less than $50,000, while 42 per cent have an income of $50,000 to $100,000. With lockdowns freeing up our days, 28 per cent say they started their new business because they had more spare time on their hands.

Kimye

If you’ve been on the internet at all this month, you’ve probably heard that Kimye are kaput. Court records show that Kim K filed for divorce from Kanye West earlier this month after 6 1/2 years of marriage.

Instagram’s new algorithm

Instagram has done it again. Earlier this month the social media platform announced it will no longer be promoting Reels that show the watermark of an alternate social media platform (cough, TikTok).

Since Reels were announced this past summer, Instagram’s algorithm has been boosting engagement, visibility, and overall stats for those who create and share these short-form videos with their followers, including content that was created on an alternate platform then shared via Instagram, until now.
