June 2021 - Digital Time Capsule

2021 is already halfway over. Can you believe it?! To keep track of what has gone on in the sixth month of the year, we’ve put together a digital time capsule filled with some of the biggest moments in pop culture (and meals), COVID news, and Tik Tok trends that we’re still trying to wrap our heads around.

Check it out below!

Free Britney

This past month, Britney Spears publicly broke her silence on the conservatorship that she has been living under since 2008. Her public testimony has confirmed suspicions long held by the #FreeBritney movement, which alleged that the pop singer was unhappy in her conservatorship and petitioned for her legal autonomy to be reinstated. It’s not clear how the next steps will play out, but we’re hoping it plays out in Britney’s favour.

Local Cannabis Beverage Outlet

Earlier this month, Truss Beverage Co. launched a new campaign in support of cannabis retailers, called Local Cannabis Beverage Outlet, kicking-off with a storefront takeover at Miss Jones Cannabis - Osgoode Outpost. The campaign aimed to draw attention to the challenges cannabis retailers are facing and remind legal-age consumers that the LCBO isn’t the only store selling beverages this summer. The Impression Campaign

Earlier this month, we partnered with Humber College and Code Black Communicator Network to launch The Impression Campaign, a scholarship focused on both recruitment and retention of racialized students in the public relations program. Why both? Because the challenges facing students even considering a career in communications need to be addressed, in addition to providing assistance to those students who are already within the program. The patio comeback

We thought it might never happen, but we finally saw the reopening of life as we knew it this month! Ontario entered not only step one, but also step TWO of its reopening plan as the province has continued to see its COVID-19 case counts drop and its vaccination rates continue to rise.

EUROCUP 2020(1)

If you’ve been out to any of the aforementioned patios these days, or if you’re a die-hard fan, you may have caught a glimpse of the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship, or Euro 2020. After being postponed last year due to COVID-19, the championship kicked off on June 11. As one of the biggest football events that is held once every four years, it was certainly welcomed after a year of being patient.

Cisco Canada, CyberNB and New Brunswick are skilling for the future

To help address the growing digital skills gap, Cisco Canada has partnered with New Brunswick’s Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and CyberNB to create a new cybersecurity curriculum for high school students. Kicking off in September 2021, the program will ensure upwards of 1,500 students – over three years – will have the opportunity to be exposed to career paths in technology they might not have considered before. For those still confused on the popular [adult swim] trend (which we know is many), here’s some context; back in the day when we watched shows on cable television, the Cartoon Network switched over to Adult Swim, its adult programming, in the evening. The station featured weird and short bumps between episodes. Paired with an audio sample from BADBADNOTGOOD’s Time Moves Slow, Tik Tokers have taken this trend and ran with it, making brief but very creative bits.

Born this way - 10 year anniversary

If you had any doubt that time just absolutely flies, Lady Gaga’s iconic Born This Way album’s 10th anniversary is a testament to that. To celebrate the occasion, she released a 10 year anniversary edition of her number one album, with six new covers of her songs by artists representing the LGBTQ+ community.
