May 2021 - Digital Time Capsule

Like most of this year, May came and went quicker than we can do the vaccine arm stretch. Yet another pandemic month has gone by with incredible pop culture news, new food trends, and a ton of throwbacks to keep us going into next year. Check out our roundup of the month below!

Vaccine Arm Stretch
The TikTok trend, which includes swinging your arm in circles like a windmill after receiving the vaccine, supposedly helps relieve soreness and muscle fatigue. While there is no scientific evidence behind its effectiveness, there is no doubt that swinging your arm in circles is one way to show strangers you spend too much time on TikTok. If anything, seeing others doing the swinging arm at a vaccine clinic shows that TikTok is one of the many platforms that keep us together despite being physically apart.

Check it out for yourself here.

Do you believe Cher is 75?
May 20 is not just any other day in May. It’s the one and only Cher’s birthday! This year marked an important milestone as the absolute icon turned 75 years old. Cher’s talent, and versatility is only matched by her ability to pull off some of the most outlandish outfits we’ve ever seen, marking her legendary status.

Pepper Sandwich
We know that Tiktok has no shortage of food content and food trends. Next one on our radar? The bell pepper sandwich. Exactly what it sounds like, this trend involves ditching bread for peppers and throwing your favourite sandwich fillings in between two pepper halves. Will we ever get over our obsession with replacing sandwich bread with other substitutes? Maybe not, but this sandwich does look delicious AND filling.

The One Where They Reunite
The long-awaited Friends reunion finally aired and it was everything we could have asked for. Between seeing the cast greet each other on set for the first time since 2004, all of the A-list cameos, and most importantly, finding out that Rachel and Ross were actually in love - it was well worth the year-long wait.

Bennifer
Another throwback and highly talked about pop culture moment this month was the return of Bennifer. The iconic duo of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck graced our screens yet again and let us tell you, we STAN! Some people think it’s a PR stunt, but us? We see soulmates!

Canceling Ellen
The Ellen Degeneres Show is coming to an end. At this point, is anyone surprised? While Ellen decided herself for the 19th season to be the last, there is no doubt public backlash, and declining ratings are partly to blame. With ratings falling by more than 43% in the past year, there is a clear shift in viewer narratives - we are ready for someone new. With respect to her nearly two-decade-long stint, we are excited about who will replace her.

Eurovision 2021 (the actual contest, not the Will Ferrel movie)
The Eurovision Song Contest wrapped up this past month in Rottendam, Sweden, with Italy’s Måneskin taking home the gold with their single Zitti E Buoni. If you’re like (most of) us, your only exposure to Eurovision might be through the 2020 Netflix musical comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The actual contest, while less comedic, is just as entertaining.
